Everybody Has A Plan Until They Get Punched In The Mouth

The first month of 2018 has come and gone.  1/12 of the year has happened already.  Over 8% of the year has flown by in a blink of an eye.  You set some plans and some goals to start the year.  Where are you at on those? If you are like most of us, the minute you set out to take action on your goals you probably ran into some resistance!  So what now?

 

The good news?  92% of your year is still ahead of you.  Most of 2018 is still your blank canvas to paint the masterpiece of your life upon.  The point of this post is to remind you how fast time flies.  

 

If you were waiting for something to happen to get your goals started you are losing time. Nothing changes unless you do. 

 

It's going to be hard. REALLY hard; if you are to accomplish anything worth while. If you feel completely derailed, here are a few steps that may help you get that locomotive back on the tracks and get your goals back en route. 

 

  1. Reread your goals. If you wrote down your goals to start off the year, review them!  Do whatever you can to keep them top of mind.  I.e. post them on a white board in your bedroom, repeat them and write them every morning, put post notes up in your car so you see them each day... Everyday that passes is moving you towards those goals or away from them.  (if you didn't write your goals down to start the year, you are not derailed, you never even got you train on the tracks - GO WRITE YOUR 2018 AMBITIONS DOWN RIGHT NOW!!!!)

  2. Remind yourself of the ACTIONS required to reach your goals. John Maxwell says the secret of our success is hidden in our daily actions.  Chances are if you were looking to make a positive change this year, you are going to have to overcome some not so positive habits.  

     

    Don't shoot for perfection, but shoot for ACTION. Shoot for progress. Ask yourself, can I just do a little better today?

  3. Ask for help.  Tell a friend or mentor (someone who supports your growth and dreams) about your goal and action items. Meet with them weekly or monthly to help you set some accountability rhythms.  This will keep you on track and help you avoid procrastination.

  4. Make a daily list with at least small tasks that are moving you towards your goals.  DO THE HARDEST TASK ON YOUR LIST FIRST/EARLY. Getting the monsters out of the way early, is the best way to build momentum on your goals.  This will clear up a ton of mental space and help build some confidence in the achievement of your goals. I personally get up crazy early to try and do my biggest scary task before 6am.  It feels good to accomplish your biggest hurdle before most of the world is even awake starting...

 

There is nothing wrong with having a little bit of a false start.  If you didn't blow all of your goals out of the water to start the year, you are not out of the game.  Just need to adjust your strategy early in the game.  Today is that day.  It's not too late, but February will be over before you know it.  Next chapter of 2018 starts right now.  Is this going to be the most impactful year of your life or what?!
